Apparel is the ASEAN category with the deepest capacity and the least forgiving timeline, because the garment factory is never the bottleneck — the fabric is.
Country fit
Vietnam leads on volume cut-and-sew, outerwear and technical performance wear. Indonesia is strong on knit and basics with a large domestic mill base. Thailand sits higher on the value curve: smaller runs, technical fabrics, and better tolerance for complex construction.
Fabric drives everything
A garment factory can turn a run in 30–45 days. The fabric behind it takes 45–60 days if it is not in stock, and mill minimums are usually 500–1,500m per colour. This is why MOQ is quoted per colourway, not per style, and why adding a colour late costs more than adding a size.
Use stock or mill-programme fabric for a first season. Custom-developed fabric belongs in season two, once volume is proven.
Fit approval discipline
Approve a fit sample on a graded size run, not just the sample size. Record the measurement spec with tolerances and require a pre-production sample against it. Most fit disputes are grading disputes.
Compliance a first-world buyer must hold
REACH and, for the US, CPSIA for children's items; flammability rules for sleepwear; care labelling and fibre content accuracy; and for many retailers, a social audit (BSCI, SEDEX or WRAP) on the sewing facility. Test reports must be lot-relevant, not a generic certificate from another buyer's order.
Costing honestly
Garment cost is fabric plus trims plus SMV-based labour plus overhead and margin. If a quote cannot be broken into those parts, it cannot be negotiated — only haggled.
