Ceramic Tiles & Sanitary Ware from ASEAN: Construction Materials Import Guide 2026

Importing porcelain tiles, ceramic tiles and sanitary ware from Thailand and Vietnam — PEI/water-absorption specs, shade control, packing standards and freight economics.

Why ASEAN for tiles and sanitary ware

Thailand and Vietnam are top-10 global exporters of ceramic tile, and both host sanitary-ware plants producing for Japanese and European brands. Abundant local clay and feldspar, gas-fired kilns and decades of export experience put certified product 25–45% below EU supply — with design quality that has moved well beyond commodity grades.

Standards by destination market

Quality levers: absorption, shade, caliber

Specify water absorption class (≤0.5% for porcelain, freeze-thaw rated where relevant), PEI abrasion rating (IV–V for commercial floors), breaking strength per ISO 10545-4, and chemical resistance for commercial kitchens. Then control the two field killers: shade variation and caliber (size) tolerance. Contract on a single shade batch per delivery, require the factory to hold 5–10% attic stock of the same batch, and specify ISO 10545-2 dimensional tolerance.

Freight economics and packing

Tiles are dense — a 20' container maxes on weight (~27 tonnes) before volume, roughly 800–1,000 m² of 600×600 porcelain. MOQs run one container per color/size mix. Specify palletized, shrink-wrapped cartons with corner protectors and container desiccant; breakage under 2% is achievable, and your claim terms should be agreed before the first PO, not after the first broken pallet.

FAQ

Can factories match an existing tile design?

Digital inkjet decoration reproduces most stone and concrete looks from a sample or high-res scan; expect a 2–3 round sampling process and a small design fee.

What lead time should I plan?

30–45 days production for standard series, 45–60 for new designs, plus 3–5 weeks ocean freight to the US West Coast or North Europe.

Is private-label packaging available?

Yes — printed cartons with your brand and standard markings from the first container at most export plants.
