Why ASEAN instead of China in 2026

Three forces are moving Western buyers into ASEAN: tariff exposure on Chinese origin, customer pressure for a second source, and the maturity of the manufacturing base in Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. ASEAN factories are generally smaller, which means your order gets attention, but it also means you must verify capability rather than assume it. A shortlist without an on-site audit is a guess.

Specify these before you ask for a price

A vague RFQ produces a cheap quote and an expensive programme. Fix the following in writing:

  1. Rated voltage, current and phase configuration for each destination market
  2. Plug and inlet standard (Type 1, Type 2, CCS1, CCS2, GB/T) per market
  3. Ingress protection, operating temperature range and UV exposure
  4. Cable spec: conductor size, jacket compound, bend cycles and cold-flex rating
  5. Communication protocol (OCPP version) and firmware update responsibility

Market compliance for first-world buyers

United States — UL 2594 / UL 2251 for EVSE and connectors, NEC installation requirements, FCC Part 15 and Energy Star where claimed.

European Union — CE with LVD, EMC and RED where wireless, IEC 61851 and IEC 62196 conformity, plus RoHS and WEEE registration.

United Kingdom — UKCA plus the Electric Vehicle (Smart Charge Points) Regulations for domestic units, and a UK responsible person.

Australia — RCM with electrical safety approval, AS/NZS 61851 compliance and clean-energy scheme requirements where rebates apply.

Compliance evidence should be collected during the pilot build, not requested after the container is loaded. We build the document list into the production plan.

The quality plan we run

  • Hipot, insulation resistance and earth continuity on 100% of units
  • Temperature-rise testing on the connector and cable under rated load
  • IP ingress verification on the enclosure design and on production samples
  • Cable flex, tug and cold-bend testing on each cable batch
  • Functional charge-cycle test against a real vehicle or simulator before packing

Inspections are carried out by our own people on site. You receive photo and measurement reports before we authorise shipment, and nothing ships on a report you have not seen.

Landed cost, honestly

EV hardware programmes sourced in Thailand or Vietnam typically land 15–30% below a comparable Western-branded unit and avoid Chinese-origin tariff exposure. Certification and firmware support, not the bill of materials, are usually the largest hidden costs — we quote both explicitly.

Our fee is built into the landed cost you are quoted. There is no separate retainer, and you see one price per unit delivered to your named port or door.

Can ASEAN factories build to UL 2594 or IEC 61851?

Several can, and we verify by reviewing existing certificates and test reports before shortlisting, not by taking a claim at face value.

Who owns the firmware?

Whatever the contract says. We insist on a written IP and escrow position before tooling, so you are not locked to one supplier.

What volume makes a custom enclosure worthwhile?

Roughly 3,000–5,000 units a year for injection-moulded housings; below that we adapt a standard enclosure.

How long to first shipment?

12–18 weeks including certification and pilot build, then 35–50 days per repeat order plus transit.
