Where ASEAN stands in fasteners and stampings

Thailand's automotive cluster created a deep base of cold-forming, thread-rolling, stamping and plating plants. Vietnam has added capacity for stampings and CNC parts serving electronics and appliance assembly. Indonesia supplies heavier construction fasteners and structural stampings.

For Western industrial distributors and OEMs, the category is attractive as a China alternative because process control is well established and anti-dumping exposure on fasteners differs by origin — check current duty rates for your market before committing volume.

A part number is not a specification. Include the standard, grade, plating, thread class, head marking and any torque-tension requirement in the RFQ, or the quotes you receive will not be comparable.

Plating and corrosion requirements

  • Zinc electroplate with trivalent (Cr3+) passivate — hexavalent chromium is banned under RoHS and REACH for most applications
  • Zinc-nickel or Dacromet/geomet coatings where 480–1000 h neutral salt spray is required
  • Hot-dip galvanising to ISO 10684 for structural fasteners, with thread allowance verified
  • Hydrogen embrittlement relief bake within 4 hours of plating for grade 10.9 and above — ask for the bake record, not just a statement

Approval process that prevents field failures

Treat the first article like an automotive launch even if your application is not automotive:

  1. Drawing and specification sign-off, including packaging and part marking
  2. First article inspection report with full dimensional layout
  3. Material certificate EN 10204 3.1 with heat-number traceability
  4. Mechanical test data — proof load, tensile, hardness, decarburisation check
  5. Salt-spray report against the specified hours
  6. Capability data (Cpk) on critical dimensions for volume parts
  7. Signed control plan defining in-process checks and frequency

Tooling, MOQ and pricing structure

Progressive stamping dies run USD 3,000–25,000 depending on stations and part complexity; simple blank-and-form tooling can be far less. Cold-heading dies for standard fasteners often already exist. MOQs are usually stated in weight or in 10,000-piece lots for small fasteners, and 2,000–10,000 pieces for stampings.

Always agree tooling ownership, storage responsibility and maintenance in writing, and require the tool to be released or shipped on request.

Inspection and packaging

Use sampling to ISO 2859-1 with a tightened plan on safety-critical dimensions, plus 100% sorting or vision inspection where mixed-part risk exists. For packaging, specify anti-corrosion VCI bags, box weight limits for manual handling, and per-box piece-count tolerance — count disputes are the most frequent commercial friction in this category.
