A quiet strength of ASEAN engineering
Air movement equipment is heavy, low-density and engineering-driven — a poor fit for long-distance sourcing unless the factory is genuinely competent. Thailand and Malaysia are: both host sheet-metal fabricators and motor assemblers serving Japanese and European HVAC brands, with in-house welding, balancing and AMCA-style test capability.

Specification: performance before price
Never buy a fan on dimensions alone. Provide airflow (m³/h or CFM), static pressure (Pa or inWG), operating temperature, air composition (dust, corrosive, humidity), duty cycle, noise limit in dB(A) at a defined distance, and motor voltage/frequency (400 V 50 Hz vs 460 V 60 Hz matters enormously). Ask for the certified performance curve and the balancing report (ISO 1940 G6.3 or better).
Motor and electrical certification
The motor is usually the compliance bottleneck:
- US: UL 507 for fans, NEMA motors, DOE fan energy index (FEI) requirements
- EU/UK: CE/UKCA with Machinery Regulation, Low Voltage and EMC directives; ErP Regulation 327/2011 minimum efficiency; IE3/IE4 motor efficiency
- Australia: RCM plus MEPS for motors
Specify the motor brand. Many buyers permit the factory to use a local motor and then fail ErP or MEPS at customs.
MOQ, tooling and lead time
Fabricated fans can be built one-off — there is no true MOQ, though price improves sharply above 20–50 units. Impeller dies for high volume cost USD 3,000–12,000. Engineering and first-article take 4–8 weeks; series production 30–50 days.
Duty and landed cost
HS 8414.59 covers most fans; air handling units may fall under 8415. Duty is generally low into the US, EU, UK and Australia, and Thai/Malaysian origin often qualifies for preference. Fans are bulky: crate design, knock-down shipping and container cube optimisation can cut freight per unit 20–40%.
Quality and factory acceptance
Insist on a factory acceptance test: airflow and pressure at the rated duty point, current draw, vibration velocity (mm/s RMS), noise measurement, insulation resistance and hi-pot, plus weld and coating inspection (salt spray hours for coastal installs). Have the FAT witnessed by a third-party inspector or by video with instrument close-ups.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can ASEAN factories reverse-engineer a European fan?
They can match performance and interfaces. Copying a patented impeller profile is not advisable — specify duty point instead.
Can I get AMCA-certified units?
A few plants hold AMCA licences; most supply test data to AMCA 210 method without the seal. Confirm what your spec requires.
What about spare parts and warranty?
Negotiate a 2% spares allocation and a 12–24 month warranty with a defined replacement process before the PO.
Is air freight ever viable?
Only for small inline fans. Everything else ships by sea, often knocked down.
