Specifying a compound correctly
A drawing without a compound spec is not a quotation package. Define: base polymer, hardness in Shore A ±5, temperature range, media compatibility, compression set requirement (ASTM D395), tensile and elongation (ASTM D412), and any approvals — FDA 21 CFR 177.2600, NSF/ANSI 61 for potable water, WRAS for the UK, EN 549 for gas, or API 6A/6D for oilfield.
Ask for the compound recipe number and cure system, and lock it. Substituting a cheaper carbon black or reclaim content is the classic silent failure mode in low-cost sealing supply.
Tooling and MOQ
Compression moulds cost USD 1,200–6,000; injection or transfer moulds for high-volume O-rings USD 4,000–15,000. MOQ per size is typically 2,000–10,000 pieces, but many Thai plants hold standard AS568 and metric O-ring tooling, letting you buy standard sizes with no tooling at all. Die-cut gaskets need only a steel-rule die at USD 150–600.
Certification and quality systems
Look for IATF 16949 for automotive, ISO 9001 as a minimum, and a plant with in-house rheometer, hardness, tensile and compression-set testing. Request PPAP level 3 for automotive programmes and material certificates plus a batch-traceable cure record for every lot.
Compliance for Western markets
- EU/UK: REACH SVHC and PFAS scrutiny on fluoroelastomers; RoHS where seals ship inside electrical assemblies
- US: FDA and NSF where applicable; Prop 65 on plasticisers and carbon black
- Australia: WaterMark certification for plumbing seals
Duty and landed cost
Typical headings are HS 4016.93 for vulcanised rubber gaskets, 8484 for gasket sets and mechanical seals. Duty into the US and EU is low, and Thai and Vietnamese origin often qualifies for preferential treatment into Australia and the UK. Sealing products are light and dense-packing, so air freight is viable for urgent MRO — often 3–5 days door to door at USD 6–9 per kg.
Quality control plan
Dimensional check against the drawing with pin gauges and optical comparator, hardness on finished parts (not just the slab), compression set on a sample from the production lot, visual for flash, backrind and knit lines, and a documented AQL 1.0 for critical sealing surfaces.
