Import or Manufacture Medical & Lab Disposables from ASEAN

Import or Manufacture Medical & Lab Disposables from ASEAN

Sourcing gloves, syringes, lab consumables and single-use medical devices from Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia — ISO 13485, FDA, MDR and QC explained.

ASEAN already supplies a large share of the world’s examination gloves and a growing share of single-use medical and laboratory consumables. The regulatory burden — not the manufacturing — is what decides whether your programme succeeds.

TUSKO is a Bangkok-based sourcing and trading partner. We shortlist and audit factories across Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia, run the quality plan, and quote you a single landed price with one accountable contact from RFQ to port.

What buyers import in this category

  • Examination and surgical gloves, masks and gowns
  • Syringes, IV sets and single-use surgical instruments
  • Lab plasticware: tubes, pipette tips, plates and petri dishes
  • Wound care, dressings and first-aid kit components
  • Sterile packaging and cleanroom-assembled kits

Why ASEAN instead of China in 2026

Three forces are moving Western buyers into ASEAN: tariff exposure on Chinese origin, customer pressure for a second source, and the maturity of the manufacturing base in Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. ASEAN factories are generally smaller, which means your order gets attention, but it also means you must verify capability rather than assume it. A shortlist without an on-site audit is a guess.

Specify these before you ask for a price

A vague RFQ produces a cheap quote and an expensive programme. Fix the following in writing:

  1. Intended use and device classification in your destination market
  2. Material grade and biocompatibility evidence (ISO 10993 series)
  3. Sterilisation method (EO, gamma, steam) and validated dose or cycle
  4. Shelf life and accelerated ageing data
  5. Cleanroom class for assembly and packing (ISO 7 or ISO 8 typically)

Market compliance for first-world buyers

United States — FDA establishment registration and device listing; 510(k) for most Class II devices; QSR/ISO 13485 alignment; a US Agent named for the foreign manufacturer.

European Union — EU MDR 2017/745 with a Notified Body for Class Is and above, an EU Authorised Representative, UDI and EUDAMED registration.

United Kingdom — UKCA under UK MDR 2002 with a UK Responsible Person and MHRA registration.

Australia — TGA inclusion on the ARTG with an Australian Sponsor, and conformity assessment evidence.

Compliance evidence should be collected during the pilot build, not requested after the container is loaded. We build the document list into the production plan.

The quality plan we run

  • Audit of the ISO 13485 certificate scope — it must cover your exact device family
  • Sterilisation validation records and routine bioburden monitoring
  • AQL sampling to ASTM or ISO standards for pinholes, tensile and dimensions
  • Certificate of analysis per lot with retained samples
  • Full lot traceability from resin batch to shipping carton

Inspections are carried out by our own people on site. You receive photo and measurement reports before we authorise shipment, and nothing ships on a report you have not seen.

Landed cost, honestly

Landed cost is rarely the deciding factor here; regulatory rework is. Buyers typically save 10–20% versus Western manufacturing, but the real value is a supplier whose documentation survives an FDA or Notified Body review.

Our fee is built into the landed cost you are quoted. There is no separate retainer, and you see one price per unit delivered to your named port or door.

Frequently asked questions

Can a factory hold my registration?

No — your legal manufacturer or importer entity holds it. We keep the factory in a contract-manufacturing role so you own the market access.

Which ASEAN country is best for gloves and disposables?

Malaysia and Thailand dominate gloves; Vietnam and Indonesia are strong on plasticware and kit assembly. We shortlist across all four.

Do you audit cleanrooms?

Yes — particle counts, gowning discipline, pressure differentials and environmental monitoring records are part of our audit for this category.

How long to first shipment?

12–20 weeks for a registered device including validation, or 6–8 weeks for a non-sterile consumable under an existing registration.
