Why the region works for marine products
Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia are boat-building countries. Thailand exports composite hulls and yacht fit-out; Indonesia has a large aluminium and fibreglass boat sector; Vietnam contributes stainless hardware, inflatable products and textile covers. That local demand means the supply chain for deck hardware, fenders, rope, biminis, seating and rigging already exists.
Western distributors and boat brands typically source cleats, rails, hatches, ladders, boarding steps, seats, covers, fenders and PFD accessories from the region.
Corrosion performance decides your returns rate
Marine buyers get burned on corrosion more than on anything else. Set specifications explicitly:
| Part | Minimum material | Verification |
|---|---|---|
| Deck hardware, rails | AISI 316 / 316L stainless | PMI test, salt spray ASTM B117 500–1000 h |
| Fasteners | 316 stainless or hot-dip galvanised to ISO 1461 | Mill cert plus salt spray |
| Aluminium fittings | Marine grade 5052/6082, anodised 20–25 µm | Coating thickness gauge |
| Zinc/aluminium anodes | MIL-A-18001 or equivalent | Composition analysis |
304 stainless quoted as "marine grade" is the single most common substitution. Magnet tests are not enough — require PMI and independent salt-spray reports on the first production run.
Certification by product type
- Lifejackets and buoyancy aids — ISO 12402 with CE/UKCA notified-body approval for Europe, or USCG approval for the USA. Do not treat these as generic textiles; approval is model-specific.
- Navigation lights — COLREG 72 compliance, USCG or wheelmark approval where fitted to certified vessels.
- Inflatable boats and tenders — ISO 6185; EU-market boats need Recreational Craft Directive conformity.
- Electrical accessories — ISO 8846 ignition protection for engine-space equipment.
UV, salt and the tropical advantage
Products made in the tropics get tested in the tropics. Ask suppliers to expose samples on a roof rack for 60–90 days and photograph the result. For textiles and covers, specify solution-dyed acrylic or 600D polyester with UV-stabilised PU coating, plus UV-resistant thread — cheap polyester thread fails long before the fabric does.
Tooling and MOQ guidance
Investment-cast stainless hardware needs wax tooling at roughly USD 800–3,000 per part. Rotomoulded and injection parts run higher. Many factories hold existing tooling for standard cleats, hinges and hatches — buying from their catalogue with your logo is usually the fastest route to market. MOQs of 300–500 pieces per SKU are typical for cast hardware and 200–300 for sewn goods.
Packaging and freight
Retail marine goods sell from hooks and shelves, so retail packaging quality matters. Specify polybag plus header card or blister with barcode placement, and confirm carton compression testing. Salt-air corrosion begins in transit: use VCI paper for stainless and desiccant packs in the container during monsoon months.
How TUSKO supports the buy
We verify factories and their material claims on site, arrange salt-spray and UV testing, manage certification conversations for approval-controlled products, and coordinate consolidation and export. One point of contact, and our fee sits inside the landed cost you sign off.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get 316 stainless at 304 pricing? No, and any supplier who offers it is substituting. Expect roughly a 25–40% material premium for 316.
Do I need CE approval for a boat fender? No, general hardware is not approval-controlled. Buoyancy aids, lifejackets, navigation lights and RCD-scope equipment are.
What lead time is realistic? Around 45–60 days for catalogue hardware with branding, and 90–110 days where new casting tooling is needed.
Which country for which product? Thailand for composites and yacht fit-out, Vietnam for stainless hardware and sewn covers, Indonesia for aluminium boats and larger fabrications.
