The ASEAN natural stone opportunity
Vietnam has become a major exporter of granite and basalt, Indonesia supplies distinctive marble, lava stone and andesite, and Thailand adds sandstone and quartzite lines. For US, EU, UK and Australian buyers in construction, landscaping, kitchen worktops and monuments, ASEAN quarries offer competitive block prices and improving fabrication quality — often 20–35% below Italian or Brazilian equivalents at comparable finish.
Product scope
- Slabs and tiles: polished, honed, flamed or brushed granite and marble in 2cm and 3cm.
- Cut-to-size: worktops, vanity tops, stair treads and cladding panels to shop drawings.
- Landscaping stone: pavers, cobbles, kerbs, wall cladding and pool coping.
- Monuments and sculpture: headstones, statues and carved architectural elements.
What to specify
- Geological name and quarry of origin — trade names are unreliable across suppliers.
- Dimensional tolerances (±1mm for calibrated tiles), thickness range, and finish standard.
- Physical properties: water absorption, flexural strength (ASTM C880 / EN 12372), abrasion resistance and frost resistance for exterior use in cold climates.
- Colour and veining control: define an acceptable range with reference slabs photographed and signed off.
Compliance and documentation
Natural stone is lightly regulated compared with other building products, but buyers should confirm: CE marking under EN 12057/12058 for EU construction use; radioactivity testing for granite destined for German and Scandinavian markets; silica dust controls for fabricated products; and ISPM-15 heat treatment on wooden crates — a common cause of port holds in Australia and the US.
MOQs, pricing and logistics
A standard order is one 20-foot container (stone ships by weight: roughly 22–27 tonnes, or 450–550 m² of 2cm slabs). Cut-to-size work carries 15–30% premiums over standard tiles. Ocean transit runs 25–32 days to the US West Coast and 30–40 days to Northern Europe. Crating quality determines your breakage rate: insist on A-frame bundles, foam separators, corner protectors and crate weights your receiver can actually handle. Budget 3–5% breakage on well-crated shipments; 8–12% on poorly crated ones.
Quality control checkpoints
- Block selection at the quarry before cutting — the single highest-leverage inspection.
- During-production checks on calibration, polish gloss units and edge quality.
- Dry-lay inspection for colour consistency across the full order.
- Container loading supervision: crate orientation, strapping and weight distribution.
Common pitfalls
- Ordering from photographs alone — always approve physical samples from the current block.
- Mixing containers from different quarry benches without a dry-lay approval.
- Accepting crates that exceed what your warehouse can lift.
FAQs
Can I visit the quarry before ordering? Yes — and for any program above five containers per year we recommend it. TUSKO arranges quarry and factory visits with translation and inspection support.
How consistent is colour between shipments? Within one quarry bench, good. Across benches or quarries, expect variation — build colour-range approval into every repeat order.
What payment terms are typical? 30–50% deposit with balance against bill of lading, and letters of credit available for larger programs.
