Import or Manufacture Rubber & Silicone Components from ASEAN

Import or Manufacture Rubber & Silicone Components from ASEAN

Seals, gaskets, grommets and moulded silicone parts from Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia — compound specs, tooling ownership, testing and landed cost.

Thailand is the world’s largest natural rubber producer, and that upstream position gives Thai moulders a real material advantage for rubber and silicone components. The category is also unforgiving: a compound substitution you cannot see will show up as a field failure eighteen months later.

TUSKO is a Bangkok-based sourcing and trading partner. We shortlist and audit factories across Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia, run the quality plan, and quote you a single landed price with one accountable contact from RFQ to port.

What buyers import in this category

  • O-rings, seals, gaskets and diaphragms
  • Grommets, bushings, mounts and anti-vibration parts
  • Liquid silicone rubber (LSR) parts for medical and consumer devices
  • Extruded profiles, tubing and edge trim
  • Rubber-to-metal bonded components

Why ASEAN instead of China in 2026

Three forces are moving Western buyers into ASEAN: tariff exposure on Chinese origin, customer pressure for a second source, and the maturity of the manufacturing base in Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. ASEAN factories are generally smaller, which means your order gets attention, but it also means you must verify capability rather than assume it. A shortlist without an on-site audit is a guess.

Specify these before you ask for a price

A vague RFQ produces a cheap quote and an expensive programme. Fix the following in writing:

  1. Compound family (NBR, EPDM, FKM, silicone, natural) and shore hardness with tolerance
  2. Operating temperature range and chemical exposure list
  3. Compression set, tensile strength and elongation targets
  4. Tooling: number of cavities, ownership, and where the mould is stored
  5. Food-contact or medical grade requirements where relevant

Market compliance for first-world buyers

United States — FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 for food-contact rubber, NSF/ANSI 61 for potable water, and USP Class VI for medical contact.

European Union — EC 1935/2004 and 2023/2006 for food contact, REACH SVHC declarations, and EU 10/2011 where a plastic layer is involved.

United Kingdom — Retained food-contact rules plus UK REACH declarations from your supplier.

Australia — AS/NZS 4020 for products in contact with drinking water, plus general product safety obligations.

Compliance evidence should be collected during the pilot build, not requested after the container is loaded. We build the document list into the production plan.

The quality plan we run

  • Compound verification by FTIR or a third-party lab on the first lot — not just a supplier declaration
  • Hardness, tensile and compression-set testing per batch
  • Dimensional inspection of critical seal cross-sections
  • Ozone and heat ageing tests where the part sits outdoors
  • Cure-date marking and shelf-life control for elastomer stock

Inspections are carried out by our own people on site. You receive photo and measurement reports before we authorise shipment, and nothing ships on a report you have not seen.

Landed cost, honestly

Rubber and silicone programmes commonly land 15–30% below Western or Chinese equivalents, with the largest driver being tooling amortisation. We quote tooling separately so you can see the true per-piece cost across your real annual volume.

Our fee is built into the landed cost you are quoted. There is no separate retainer, and you see one price per unit delivered to your named port or door.

A realistic timeline

Stage Typical duration
Requirement scoping and RFQ pack 3–5 days
Supplier shortlist and quotations 1–2 weeks
On-site factory audit 1 week
Samples and first article approval 2–5 weeks
Pilot run and inspection 2–3 weeks
Mass production and pre-shipment QC 4–8 weeks
Ocean transit to US / EU / UK / AU 3–6 weeks

Frequently asked questions

Who keeps the mould?

You do, when it is documented in the order. We record mould ownership, cavity count and storage location before tooling starts.

How do you prevent compound downgrading?

Independent lab verification on the first lot and random re-checks during the year. This is the single most valuable test in the category.

Can Thai factories run LSR for medical parts?

Yes — several hold ISO 13485 and run LSR in controlled environments. We audit the cleanroom and the validation records.

What is a realistic timeline?

6–10 weeks for tooling and first article, then 25–40 days per repeat order plus sea transit.
