Manufacturing and Importing Windows, Doors and Facade Systems from ASEAN
Windows, doors and facade components are a high-value, specification-heavy category where ASEAN has real advantages: aluminium extrusion capacity, glass processing, and fabrication labour. For builders, distributors and project developers, the difference between a good and a bad programme is how tightly performance is specified before the first quote.
Why ASEAN
- Extrusion capacity. Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia have large aluminium extrusion and anodising/powder-coating capacity.
- Glass processing. Tempering, laminating and insulated glass units are produced regionally at scale.
- Fabrication labour. Cutting, machining, assembly and glazing are labour-intensive stages that move cost meaningfully.
- Hardware access. European and Asian hardware brands are distributed locally, so you can keep the brand your installers know.
What buyers order
| Family | Typical scope |
|---|---|
| Aluminium windows | Sliding, casement, awning, tilt-and-turn |
| Doors | Sliding, bi-fold, entrance, fire-rated leaves |
| Facade | Curtain wall, unitised systems, louvres, cladding |
| Components | Profiles, thermal breaks, gaskets, hardware kits |
| Glass | IGU, laminated, tempered, low-e coated |
Specifications that decide price and pass/fail
- Performance targets — structural wind load, water penetration, air infiltration, U-value, SHGC, and acoustic rating.
- Test standard — AAMA/NAFS in North America, EN 14351-1 with CE/UKCA in Europe, AS 2047 in Australia.
- Alloy and finish — 6063-T5/T6, anodising thickness, or powder coat with Qualicoat/AAMA 2604/2605 class and warranty years.
- Thermal break — polyamide strut or pour-and-debridge, and the resulting simulated U-value.
- Glass make-up — thicknesses, interlayer, coating, spacer, gas fill, and safety glazing marks.
- Hardware — brand, cycle-tested class, corrosion class for coastal sites.
- Tolerances and site interface — frame sizes, flashing details, fixing method.
Compliance by market
- EU/UK: windows and doors are construction products — a Declaration of Performance based on EN 14351-1 initial type testing, plus CE and UKCA marking. Fire and smoke rated products need separate classification.
- US: NAFS certification with a label from an accredited agency, NFRC ratings for energy performance, Energy Star criteria by climate zone, and hurricane/impact approvals in Florida and coastal jurisdictions.
- Australia: AS 2047 compliance with AS 1288 glazing and AS 4055 wind classification; bushfire (AS 3959) requirements in designated areas.
- All markets: safety glazing marking and thermal performance evidence are the two most commonly missing items.
MOQ, tooling and pricing behaviour
- Standard systems: no tooling cost, MOQ by container or project size.
- Custom profiles: extrusion dies are relatively inexpensive per die, but a system needs many dies — budget for a set and amortise over multiple projects.
- Testing: type testing per system and size range is a real cost; group sizes intelligently to reduce test count.
- Aluminium price: quote as metal price plus conversion, with an LME-linked adjustment for programmes longer than a quarter.
Landed cost
- FOB fabricated units or profiles
- Freight — glazed units are heavy and need crating; unglazed frames plus local glazing sometimes wins
- Duty by HS code for aluminium structures, profiles and glass
- Test and certification amortisation
- Breakage allowance and spare glass units
- Site rework risk if tolerances are loose
Many buyers land on a hybrid model: import profiles, gaskets, hardware kits and glass from ASEAN, then fabricate or glaze locally to control tolerances and lead time.
Quality control
- Pre-production: system drawings, thermal simulation, coating and alloy certificates, hardware brand list, and a first-article unit.
- Testing: water and air test on a mock-up before mass production; verify against your target standard, not a generic report.
- In-process: profile wall thickness, coating thickness and adhesion, corner strength, glazing bead and sealant application.
- Pre-shipment: dimensional audit, operation cycles, glass label check, crating and container securing check.
Frequently asked questions
Can ASEAN factories meet NAFS or AS 2047? Yes, several already ship certified systems. Certification is per system and size range, so confirm the exact scope on the certificate.
Should we import glazed or unglazed? Glazed reduces local labour but raises freight and breakage risk. For large sizes and high-value glass, local glazing is often cheaper overall.
How long are lead times? Standard systems: 45-60 days. New systems with dies and testing: 4-6 months.
Can we match an existing European system? Profiles can be matched dimensionally, but do not assume performance transfers — retesting is required for your market's declaration.
What is the biggest risk? Undefined performance targets. A window that meets no named standard cannot be sold into any first-world market, no matter how good it looks.
