Why workwear buyers are moving to ASEAN
Corporate uniforms, industrial workwear and hi-vis PPE are high-repeat, specification-driven programs — exactly where manufacturing and import from ASEAN outperforms. Vietnam's cut-make-trim scale, Thailand's technical fabric base and Indonesia's vertical mills give Western buyers options at every price point.
- Top 3 — Vietnam is a top-3 global garment exporter
- 30–50% — duty savings potential into the EU under EVFTA vs China-origin
- 12 weeks — typical repeat-order cycle, fabric in stock
What ASEAN factories produce well
- Hi-vis vests, jackets and trousers (EN ISO 20471 / ANSI 107)
- Flame-retardant and arc-rated workwear (NFPA 2112 / EN 11612) — fabric imported, garment made locally
- Corporate and hospitality uniform programs
- Healthcare scrubs and lab coats
- Polo/tee basics with embroidery and print decoration
Compliance checklist by market
| Market | Standards |
|---|---|
| USA | ANSI/ISEA 107 hi-vis; NFPA 2112 FR; CPSIA if children's; FTC labelling |
| EU | EN ISO 20471, EN 11612/1149; PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425 with CE |
| UK | UKCA PPE; EN standards adopted |
| Australia | AS/NZS 4602.1 hi-vis; AS/NZS 1906 retroreflective |
PPE-category garments need EU type-examination certificates tied to the actual factory — a certificate held by a different plant does not cover your production.
Fabric and traceability
Most performance fabrics (modacrylic blends, aramids, reflective tape from 3M or local equivalents) are imported into ASEAN. That is normal — what matters is documented lot traceability. We require:
- Fabric mill certificates per lot
- Reflective tape certificates with batch numbers
- Garment test reports referencing the actual fabric lots used
- Retained samples per production run
MOQ and cost
Uniform programs typically start at 300–500 pieces per style/color; basics at 1,000+. Landed cost versus China is usually parity to 10% lower, with the EU advantage much larger thanks to EVFTA and GSP preferences.
Frequently asked questions
Can ASEAN factories handle multi-country sizing and labelling?
Yes — US, EU and AU size grading with market-specific care labels is standard OEM work. We verify label files against your market requirements before cutting.
How do embroidery and branding work across factories?
Decoration is usually in-house or one subcontractor deep. We audit the decorator, approve strike-offs and lock thread/tape specifications in the tech pack.
What lead times should I plan?
First order 10–14 weeks including fabric; repeats 6–8 weeks with fabric greige held in stock.
