KC Mark & K-REACH for Thai Products 2026

KC certification, RRA radio approval, K-REACH chemical registration and EPR obligations for Korean importers of Thai-made products in 2026.

KC Mark and K-REACH for Thai Products (2026)

Most delays we see on Thailand-Korea projects are not customs problems. They are certification problems discovered after the goods were made. In Korea, certification is checked against the import declaration, so an uncertified product simply does not clear.

Which approval applies

Product type Requirement Body
Electrical appliances and mains-powered goods KC Safety certification KTL, KTC or other designated body under KATS
Electronics with radio or Bluetooth or Wi-Fi RRA / KC for broadcasting and communications RRA under MSIT
EMC-relevant electronics KC EMC registration Designated bodies
Children's products, toys, textiles for children KC certification under the Special Act Designated bodies
Chemicals and substances K-REACH registration or notification Ministry of Environment
Cosmetics Korean Cosmetics Act, responsible importer duties MFDS
Pressure equipment, gas appliances Separate KGS approval KGS

How KC certification actually works

  1. Identify the exact scheme and standard for the product. Self-declaration, registration and full certification are different tracks with very different cost and timing.
  2. The Thai factory submits technical documentation - circuit diagrams, critical component list, insulation data, user manual.
  3. Samples are tested at a Korean designated laboratory, or at an accredited lab under MRA where accepted.
  4. For safety certification, a factory inspection of the Thai plant is normally required, with periodic follow-up audits.
  5. The certificate is issued in the name of the applicant. If it is issued to your Thai supplier, they control your market access - so consider holding it in your own Korean entity's name.

Typical timing: 6-12 weeks for straightforward appliances, longer where a factory audit must be scheduled in Thailand.

Critical component discipline

Korean KC certification is component-sensitive. If the Thai factory swaps a power supply, switch or cable to an uncertified equivalent, the certification is invalid even though the product looks identical. Put a written change-control clause in the purchase agreement and verify components at pre-shipment inspection.

K-REACH

Chemicals, and substances in some articles, trigger registration or notification duties with volume thresholds. The obligation falls on the Korean importer, or on an Only Representative appointed by the Thai manufacturer. Confirm the substance list and volumes before contracting - retrofitting registration after the first order is expensive and slow.

EPR and packaging

Korea operates extended producer responsibility on packaging and on several product categories including electronics and batteries. Importers register, report volumes and pay recycling fees. Ask the Thai factory to quote mono-material packaging from the start.

Practical sequence for a new product

  1. Confirm certification route and standard before tooling
  2. Get the Thai factory's technical file reviewed by the Korean test body
  3. Send pre-production samples for testing
  4. Schedule the factory audit while pre-production runs
  5. Lock the critical component list into the purchase order
  6. Only then release mass production

We manage this sequence as your single point of contact in Thailand, including the factory audit logistics and component verification, with our fee inside the landed cost you approve before production.

FAQ

Is the KC mark mandatory? Yes, for products within the covered categories. Without it, the import declaration cannot be completed.

Can the Thai factory hold the KC certificate? It can, but then it controls your access to the Korean market. Holding it in your own Korean entity's name is usually the safer commercial position.

Does the Thai factory need an on-site audit? For KC safety certification, generally yes, with periodic follow-up audits.

How long does KC certification take? Commonly 6-12 weeks including testing and the factory audit, longer for complex or first-time products.

Who is responsible for K-REACH registration? The Korean importer, or an Only Representative appointed by the Thai manufacturer.
