Thai Factory MOQ Guide 2026: What Volumes Are Realistic

"What is your MOQ?" is the first question most buyers ask and the least useful one. MOQ is not a policy number — it is the output of material purchase units, machine changeover time, and how interested the factory is in your programme.

Where MOQ actually comes from

  1. Raw material purchase units. Steel arrives in coils, resin in 25kg bags or tonne lots, fabric in dye-lot rolls. A dye lot may be 300–500 metres whether you need it or not.
  2. Changeover cost. A press or line that takes four hours to set up will not run for twenty minutes of output.
  3. Colour and additive minimums. Masterbatch and custom compounds carry their own minimums, often stricter than the moulding itself.
  4. Certification and testing amortisation. For regulated goods, test cost per unit collapses only at volume.
  5. Priority. A factory at 95% capacity quotes a high MOQ to filter buyers. The same factory quotes lower in a soft quarter.

Indicative 2026 ranges by category

Category Typical MOQ Notes
Injection moulded parts 1,000 – 5,000 pcs Falls sharply once your tool is in-house
Sheet metal / fabrication 100 – 1,000 pcs Material sheet size drives it
Stainless equipment 20 – 200 pcs Often quoted per model
Rubber and silicone 1,000 – 10,000 pcs Compound batch size dominates
Textiles and apparel 300 – 1,000 pcs per colourway Dye lot, not total order
Cosmetics / personal care 3,000 – 10,000 units Filling line and bulk batch minimums
Food and beverage OEM 1,000 – 5,000 units per SKU Bulk batch and label plate cost
Packaging (printed) 5,000 – 20,000 pcs Print plates and web width
Furniture / rattan / home decor 50 – 500 pcs Handwork categories are the friendliest

Treat these as opening positions, not limits. Thailand's Tier-2 base — shops that grew up serving Japanese OEM programmes — is unusually tolerant of moderate volumes compared with equivalent Chinese suppliers.

Six legitimate ways to lower MOQ

  • Take the factory's stock colour and stock material. Most MOQ pain is customisation pain.
  • Combine SKUs on one material run. Three variants on the same resin and colour often count as one batch.
  • Accept a longer lead time and let them slot you into an existing production window.
  • Buy the material yourself for the full minimum and store the balance against the next order.
  • Commit to a schedule — a 12-month blanket order with monthly releases converts a small order into an attractive one.
  • Order through a partner who consolidates. Combined volume across buyers changes the factory's arithmetic.

What not to do: pay a "small order surcharge" without checking the amortised total. A 40% MOQ premium on a test batch can be entirely rational — just price it as market research, not as your unit cost.

MOQ and your first order strategy

A small first order is not a weakness; it is diligence. It tests the factory's dates, packing, and behaviour before you commit capital to tooling. Many long-running programmes started under USD 30,000. If a supplier refuses any trial volume at any price, that is information about how they will treat you at scale.

The MOQ conversation that works

Do not ask "what is your MOQ?". Ask: what material lot size are you buying in, how long is the changeover, and what is the smallest run that does not disrupt your line? You will get a real number and a path to reduce it.

How TUSKO handles it

We do not gate clients by order size. Because you order through TUSKO and we run continuous programmes across ASEAN, we can place small first orders that a factory would decline from a new direct buyer — and our fee, built into the order price, falls as your volume grows.

FAQ

What is a typical MOQ for a Thai factory?

It depends on category — roughly 100–1,000 pieces for fabrication, 1,000–5,000 for moulded parts, and 3,000–10,000 units for filled cosmetics or personal care.

Can I place a trial order below MOQ?

Often yes, at a per-unit premium or a longer lead time. Ask for a sample run priced separately rather than pushing the factory to break its material minimum.

Why is MOQ quoted per colour rather than per order?

Because colour is a material decision. Dye lots, masterbatch, and print plates all carry their own minimums independent of your total quantity.

Does MOQ drop after the first order?

Usually. Once tooling, setup, and approvals exist, the marginal run is cheaper, and repeat buyers get scheduling flexibility that new buyers do not.

Are Thai MOQs lower than Chinese MOQs?

For mid-volume industrial categories, frequently yes. For high-volume consumer goods where China has dedicated mass lines, no.

Is a small order surcharge a red flag?

No. It reflects real setup cost. The red flag is a surcharge the factory cannot explain in terms of material lots or changeover time.
