First Article Inspection for Thai Production

First Article Inspection for Thai Production

A practical first article inspection (FAI) and PPAP-style approval process for Thai manufacturing in 2026 — what to measure, what to demand, and when to.

First Article Inspection with Thai Factories (2026)

Approving a sample by eye is how importers end up with 5,000 units that fit nothing. A first article inspection (FAI) turns "looks right" into measured evidence before bulk runs.

What FAI actually proves

An FAI part must be made on production tooling, by production operators, with the production process — not hand-finished in the sample room. That is the whole point: it proves the process, not the part.

The FAI package to demand

Document Why it matters
Ballooned drawing Every dimension numbered and traceable
Dimensional report Actual measured values vs tolerance
Material certificates Grade, mill/lot traceability
Process flow + control plan Where quality is checked in production
Appearance / golden sample Agreed cosmetic baseline, signed both sides
Test reports Function, safety, certification-relevant tests
Capability data (Cpk) For critical dimensions on high-volume parts

For automotive or medical work, ask whether the plant can supply full PPAP Level 3. Many Tier-1-serving Thai plants can; general fabricators cannot, and that tells you something about the supplier.

Release rules

Bulk production releases only when: all dimensions in tolerance or formally deviated in writing, golden samples signed and retained by both parties, and the control plan agreed. Any out-of-tolerance dimension needs a written deviation with an expiry — never a verbal "OK for this run".

Pilot run before full volume

Run 5–10% of the first PO as a pilot, inspect at AQL level, then release the balance. It costs a week and saves entire orders. Combine with your QC and AQL plan and independent pre-shipment inspection.

Keep the record

Retain the FAI package for the life of the product plus your warranty period. It is your defence in a product liability or customs origin dispute, and it makes engineering change control possible.

FAQ

How many parts should a first article be?

Typically 3–5 parts per tool or cavity, measured individually. Multi-cavity moulds need parts from every cavity, identified by cavity number.

Who pays for first article inspection?

The factory produces and measures the FAI at its own cost as part of development; you pay only if you commission a third-party lab or inspector.

How long does FAI take in Thailand?

Allow 1–2 weeks after tooling is finished for measurement and reporting, plus lab time if certification testing is involved.

What if a dimension is out of tolerance but the part works?

Accept it via a written deviation and update the drawing at the next revision. Do not leave the drawing and reality disagreeing — it destroys future accountability.

Do I need FAI for simple stock-based products?

Not a full FAI, but you still need a signed golden sample and a specification sheet, otherwise there is no objective standard to reject against.
