Why ASEAN for aluminium extrusion
Aluminium extrusion from Thailand and Vietnam offers two distinct advantages: cost 15–30% below domestic supply, and — for US buyers — a route around the anti-dumping and countervailing duties that apply to Chinese extrusions. ASEAN plants run presses from 600 to 4,000+ tons with in-house anodizing and powder coating, supplying architectural, industrial and solar-frame programs worldwide.
Product scope
- Industrial profiles — machine frames, conveyors, T-slot systems, heatsinks.
- Architectural — curtain wall, window/door systems, louvers, façade sections.
- Solar — panel frames and mounting rails (high-volume specialty of the region).
- Fabricated — cut-to-length, CNC-machined, drilled, welded and assembled extrusions.
Specify the alloy and temper correctly
Name the alloy and temper per EN/AA designations: 6063-T5/T6 for architectural, 6061-T6 for structural, 6101 for electrical conductivity. Require mill certificates with actual chemistry and mechanical properties per billet lot, and hardness checks (Webster) on finished profiles. Alloy substitution — particularly with recycled-content billet — is the category's classic failure mode; a 10-second spectrometer shot at pre-shipment inspection settles it.
Dies and tooling
Custom dies run USD 800–3,000 for standard profiles, more for large or multi-void sections, with 2–3 week die lead time and sample lengths for approval before production. Own the die, tag it, and record it in a tooling agreement — dies are portable, and ownership is your leverage. MOQ is typically 500 kg per profile per run.
Surface finishing options
- Mill finish — cheapest; fine for hidden industrial use.
- Anodizing — specify class and thickness (e.g. 15–20 µm for exterior architectural, Qualanod-standard plants exist in both countries).
- Powder coating — AAMA 2603/2604/2605 performance classes; name the powder brand (AkzoNobel/Jotun lines are common) and demand cross-hatch adhesion and coating-thickness records.
Duties, origin and documentation
US AD/CVD exposure hinges on substantial transformation and honest origin declaration. Legitimate ASEAN extrusion from regional billet qualifies; Chinese billet merely re-pressed in ASEAN does not. Work only with plants that document billet origin, and keep mill certificates traceable — CBP enforcement in this category is active and retroactive.
QC checkpoints
- Dimensional checks against the die drawing, including twist and straightness per EN 755-9 / ASTM B221.
- Coating thickness (eddy-current gauge), adhesion, and for anodizing, seal quality (admittance test).
- Packaging: interleaved paper or foam between profiles, bundled and crated — surface scratching in transit is the top claim cause.
FAQ
Can I buy small quantities of a custom profile?
Realistically from 500 kg per run; below that, buy stock profiles or share a die with the factory's existing catalog shapes.
How do I confirm my parts qualify as ASEAN origin?
Require billet mill certificates from the extruder per shipment; TUSKO audits origin documentation as part of supplier qualification.
What tolerances are normal?
Standard extrusion tolerance per EN 755-9 or ASTM B221; tighter requires post-machining, which regional plants also provide.
