Metal components are where ASEAN's automotive and appliance industries pay off for buyers in unrelated sectors: the capability was built for demanding customers and is available to smaller ones.
Capability map
Thailand carries the deepest base — CNC machining, stamping and progressive dies, aluminium and iron casting, sheet metal fabrication, heat treatment and plating — built around automotive and appliance supply. Vietnam is growing fast in fabrication and machining at competitive labour cost. Malaysia is strong in precision machining and semiconductor-adjacent parts.
You cannot source metal from a description
The qualification package is the drawing set with GD&T, material specification by standard (not "stainless"), surface treatment specification with thickness, and the inspection points that matter. A quote issued against a photo will be re-quoted after tooling.
Material certificates and traceability
Require mill certificates (EN 10204 3.1 or equivalent) per heat or lot, and require the factory to keep the link between certificate and shipped lot. For load-bearing or pressure applications this is not paperwork — it is the whole basis of liability.
Qualification the way OEMs do it
Even outside automotive, borrow the discipline: first article inspection with a dimensional report against every drawing callout, capability data on critical dimensions, and a documented change-control rule that any process or material change requires re-approval. Cheap to demand up front, impossible to reconstruct later.
Tooling ownership and transfer
Stamping dies and casting patterns are the real switching cost. Own them contractually, take drawings, and specify condition on transfer. A second-source qualification on your own tool is what keeps pricing honest over years.
Where TUSKO sits
We audit the machine list against your tolerance requirements rather than the marketing brochure, hold the FAI and material certificates, run dimensional sampling per lot, and manage export documentation so the parts and their paperwork arrive together.
