For a first-world brand, moulding is the category where supplier selection has the longest consequences, because the tool is an asset that lives at the factory for years.

Resin choice drives cost and compliance

- Engineering resins (PC, PA6/66, POM, PBT) for load-bearing or heat-exposed parts
- Food-contact grades need FDA or EU 10/2011 declarations with migration testing
- Recycled content targets (EU packaging rules, UK plastic packaging tax) should be specified as a percentage and verified with certificates
Price your parts as resin plus machine time plus labour. Ask for the shot weight, runner weight and cycle time; a moulder who shares those numbers is quoting honestly and can be benchmarked as resin markets move.

Quality issues to watch
Sink marks, weld lines on visible faces, warpage on large flat parts, flash at the parting line, colour drift between resin lots, and inconsistent shrinkage when regrind is used without control. Specify maximum regrind percentage in writing.
Commercial reality
Tool lead time is typically 30–50 days, plus 2–4 weeks of sampling. MOQ per production run is usually set by machine setup: 3,000–10,000 pieces is common for consumer parts. Colour changes carry a purge cost, so batch colours sensibly.

Can moulders handle assembly and packing?
