Thailand has built decades of appliance manufacturing around Japanese OEMs, so motor assembly, plastic moulding and electrical safety practice are mature. Vietnam is growing fast in assembly, and Malaysia adds strong electronics and PCBA support. Together they can produce most mains-powered small appliances at export quality.
Certification defines the schedule
Plan for IEC 60335 based safety testing, plus EMC and, for the EU, LVD and RoHS compliance. UL or ETL listing is normal for the US market and takes 8 to 14 weeks, running in parallel with tooling rather than after it. Skipping this sequencing is the most common cause of a missed launch.
Tooling and unit economics
Injection tooling for a typical appliance housing set runs USD 15,000 to 60,000 depending on part count and finish. Break-even against China usually appears between 3,000 and 10,000 units per year once tariffs and freight are included, so run the numbers before committing.
Quality controls that matter
Hi-pot and earth continuity testing on 100% of units, functional run-in on a defined sample, drop and packaging transit testing, and a documented change-control procedure for any component substitution in the power path.
