Where the factories actually are
- Samut Prakan / Bang Poo — metal fabrication, plastics, electronics assembly; 45 min from central Bangkok.
- Eastern Economic Corridor (Chonburi, Rayong, Chachoengsao) — automotive, rubber, petrochemical downstream, larger BOI plants; 1.5–2.5 hrs.
- Ayutthaya / Pathum Thani — food processing, packaging, appliances; 1–1.5 hrs north.
- Chiang Mai / Lamphun — food ingredients, handicraft, ceramics, apparel; internal flight.
- Songkhla / Hat Yai — rubber, seafood, latex products; internal flight.
Do not try to combine Bangkok and Chiang Mai suppliers in the same day. Plan two factory visits per day, three maximum in one cluster.
A workable 7-day itinerary
- Day 1 Arrive BKK, recover, review shortlist and audit forms.
- Day 2 Two Samut Prakan factories.
- Day 3 EEC day trip — one large plant plus one Tier-2.
- Day 4 Trade fair or Ayutthaya cluster.
- Day 5 Second visit to the two front-runners; sample review and pricing session.
- Day 6 Commercial meetings: terms, MOQ, tooling, QC protocol.
- Day 7 Debrief, decision matrix, depart.
Factory visit checklist
- Ask to see the production line running your process, not the showroom.
- Check the QC room: calipers, gauges, calibration stickers with dates.
- Request the last 3 months of internal defect data.
- Photograph the loading dock and warehouse — housekeeping predicts consistency.
- Confirm ownership: is this their plant or are they brokering to a sub-contractor?
- Verify DBD registration and export history, not just a brochure.
