The Thailand-specific realities

  • Many Thai factories already hold IEC 60335 / 62368 CB certificates from serving EU and Japanese customers. A CB report shortens NRTL work meaningfully — ask for it during shortlisting.
  • Component-level compliance is where projects fail: a UL-listed assembly requires UL-recognized components (wire, connectors, PCBs, power supply). Substituting a cheaper local connector after approval invalidates the file.
  • Factory inspection matters. NRTL listing includes quarterly follow-up service inspections at the Thai plant. Confirm the factory has hosted them before.
  • If the factory holds the certification, the certificate is theirs, not yours. Switching suppliers means re-certifying. Consider holding the file in your own company's name — costlier upfront, portable later.

Is UL certification legally required in the USA?

Can I use ETL instead of UL?

Yes. ETL (Intertek) is an OSHA-recognized NRTL and tests to the same UL standards. It is typically cheaper and faster, and it is accepted by most US retailers.

Does a Thai factory's CB certificate help?

Considerably. A CB report to IEC 62368 or 60335 can be leveraged into the NRTL process, cutting test scope, cost, and weeks off the timeline.

Who should own the certification file?

If you plan to keep the product long term or may change factories, hold it in your own company name. Factory-held files are cheaper but lock you to that supplier.
