Thai Manufacturing: Labelling Rules by Market 2026

Product labelling is where good factories and careless buyers most often meet a customs hold. A carton that ships fine to Singapore can be refused in Germany over a missing importer address. If you plan to import or manufacture from Thailand for several developed markets, the label is a design deliverable, not a printing afterthought.

Core requirements by destination

Market Must appear on product or retail pack Language
United States Country of origin, importer/distributor, applicable safety marks, FTC content rules English
Canada Bilingual mandatory content, importer address, metric first English + French
EU Manufacturer and EU importer name and address, CE/UKCA where applicable, EPR marks Official language(s) of each state sold
United Kingdom UK importer address, UKCA where applicable English
Japan Importer name, material and care marks, PSE where applicable Japanese
Australia / NZ Country of origin, supplier identity, RCM where applicable English

Two traps recur. First, the EU importer address must be a real EU entity — a Thai factory address alone is not compliant for regulated products. Second, country of origin marking rules in the US are literal about permanence and position; adhesive labels on the pack are sometimes insufficient where marking on the article is required.

Build one artwork system, not six labels

Design a base layout with a fixed compliance block and variable panels per market. Keep a single part number per market variant so the factory cannot mix them. Practical controls that prevent recalls:

  • Approve a printed sample from the actual press, not a PDF.
  • Give the factory a do-not-alter zone for the compliance block.
  • Include the label revision in the packing list and on the carton.
  • Photograph approved labels and store them in the supplier document pack.

Barcodes, traceability and digital labels

Retailers in developed markets increasingly want GS1 barcodes plus a lot or batch code that survives the whole shelf life. Add a QR link only if you control the landing page and can keep it live — a dead QR on a European retail pack is a compliance question, not a marketing one. From 2026 onwards, EU digital product passport pilots make batch-level traceability data worth capturing at the Thai factory even before it is mandatory for your category.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Thai factory print all market labels?

Yes, and it usually should, since applying labels at the destination adds handling cost. What it cannot do is decide the content — the importer of record carries that legal responsibility in each market.

Whose address goes on an EU retail pack?

The manufacturer's name and address plus an EU-established importer's name and address. For UK sales, a UK importer address is required separately after the transition rules ended.

Does country-of-origin marking have to say "Made in Thailand"?

For US imports the marking must indicate the country of origin in English, legibly and permanently, to the ultimate purchaser. "Made in Thailand" is the safe wording; abbreviations and ambiguous phrasing invite CBP questions.

How do I stop the wrong label going in the wrong carton?

Separate part numbers per market variant, physical segregation on the packing line, label revision printed on the carton, and a pre-shipment inspection check that includes label verification against the approved sample.
