Component sourcing is the real risk

Most harness problems trace to connectors, not labour. Decide early whether the factory buys components or you supply them. If the factory buys, require original-distributor traceability for branded connectors — grey-market TE, Molex and JST parts circulate widely and fail intermittently rather than obviously.

Tooling and equipment

Applicator tooling for each terminal type runs USD 800–3,000. Confirm the factory has the correct applicator for your terminal series and that crimp height is measured and recorded, not eyeballed. Ask for a crimp cross-section (micro-section) report at first article.

Testing evidence you should receive

  • 100% continuity and insulation resistance test logs
  • Hipot results where specified
  • Pull-force testing on a sampled basis per AWG
  • First article dimensional report against the layout drawing
