Why Indonesia for furniture in 2026
Indonesia is the largest furniture exporter in Southeast Asia, shipping over USD 2.5B of wooden and rattan furniture annually. For US, EU, and UK buyers rebalancing away from China after Section 301 and EU deforestation pressure, Indonesia offers three advantages: (1) a legally verified timber system (SVLK) recognized under the EU FLEGT VPA since 2016, (2) deep craft clusters with 200+ years of joinery heritage, and (3) preferential access to key markets via IJEPA (Japan), RCEP, IK-CEPA (Korea), and the emerging IEU-CEPA.

The four furniture clusters (geo overview)
| Cluster | Specialty | Typical buyer | Share of exports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jepara (Central Java) | Solid teak, mahogany, carved dining & bedroom | US retailers, EU brands | ~35% |
| Solo / Sukoharjo | Rattan, wicker, garden & hospitality | Hotel FF&E, EU home | ~20% |
| Cirebon (West Java) | Rattan, mixed material, contract | US/EU wholesale | ~15% |
| Yogyakarta & Semarang | Reclaimed wood, industrial, boutique | DTC brands, Amazon FBA | ~15% |
| Surabaya & Bali | Upholstered, resort, high-end custom | Designer, hospitality | ~15% |
Jepara alone hosts ~15,000 workshops and 4 dedicated container yards feeding Semarang port (Tanjung Emas). Solo rattan factories ship out of Semarang and Tanjung Priok (Jakarta).
MOQ tiers by factory size
- Tier 1 — Export factories (200+ workers): MOQ 1×40HC per SKU (~80–150 pieces for dining sets). Full QC lab, SVLK, BSCI, FSC-mix on request. Lead time 60–90 days.
- Tier 2 — Mid workshops (30–80 workers): MOQ mixed container (3–6 SKUs, ~40 pieces total per SKU). Best for boutique brands. Lead time 75–110 days.
- Tier 3 — Craft workshops (< 20 workers): MOQ 10–30 pieces per SKU, LCL friendly. Ideal for prototyping. Lead time 90–130 days but variable.
Compliance stack (do not skip)
- SVLK (Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu) — mandatory Indonesian timber legality certificate. Under the EU FLEGT VPA, SVLK-covered shipments enter the EU without additional EUTR due diligence — a real cash-flow advantage vs. Vietnam or Malaysia.
- EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) — enforcement from 30 December 2025 for large operators, 30 June 2026 for SMEs. Requires geolocation coordinates of the harvest plot. Confirm your supplier already collects plot polygons.
- FSC / PEFC — voluntary but usually required by IKEA, Wayfair, Crate & Barrel, John Lewis.
- CARB Phase 2 / TSCA Title VI — for any composite panels shipped to the US.
- BSCI / SMETA — social audit; expected by most EU buyers.
Landed cost math (illustrative teak dining table, FOB Semarang)
| Line | USD |
|---|---|
| Ex-works Jepara | 180.00 |
| Inland to Semarang + export docs | 8.50 |
| FOB Semarang | 188.50 |
| Ocean freight to LA/LB (per pc, 40HC = 60 tables) | 21.00 |
| US duty (HTS 9403.60, MFN 0%) | 0.00 |
| MPF + HMF | 0.85 |
| Destination + drayage + 3PL | 14.00 |
| Landed DDP US warehouse | ~224.35 |
Indonesia furniture typically lands 8–14% below Vietnam-equivalent teak because raw material is domestic and labor rates in Central Java are 20–25% lower than Ho Chi Minh.
Payment and Incoterms
- Standard: 30% T/T deposit, 70% against copy B/L. Never pay 100% upfront.
- FOB Semarang or FOB Tanjung Priok for experienced buyers.
- CIF / DAP only if you truly cannot manage freight — you overpay 6–9%.
- LC at sight is possible with Tier-1 factories above USD 40k orders.
How TUSKO handles Indonesia orders
We operate a Jakarta liaison plus rotating QC in Jepara and Solo. You get one point of contact across cluster scouting, sample rounds, SVLK/FSC verification, pre-shipment inspection (AQL 2.5), and consolidated LCL if you can't fill a 40HC. All fees are already inside the quoted landed cost — no separate retainer, no separate commission.

FAQ
Q: Can I visit factories? Yes. Semarang airport (SRG) is the fastest hop into Jepara (~1.5 hr drive). Plan 3 days minimum: 1 day Jepara solid wood, 1 day Solo rattan, 1 day showroom rounds.
Q: Is Bali good for sourcing? Bali is excellent for design and prototyping (high-end resort furniture, custom upholstery) but production volume and container economics favor Central Java.
Q: What about EUDR if my supplier is small? Push the geolocation requirement into your PO now. Small workshops that cannot produce plot coordinates will be locked out of the EU by mid-2026.
Q: Container mixing? Yes — a well-planned 40HC can mix 4–6 SKUs across 2 workshops if consolidated at a Semarang bonded warehouse. We do this weekly.
